While it can be used for many things, Fukunishi Udagami has a very specific use in Japan as a layer in scrolls. The addition of clay with the fibre makes the paper insect resistent, and gives it dimensional stability in changing humidity levels. The fibre is cooked in wood ash treated water and is hand beaten. Sheets are formed with noriutsugi formation aid, and dried on wooden boards.,Fukunishi Udagami is produced in Yoshino, Nara prefecture. The maker has been certified as a preservation of cultural property papermaker by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Heritage Washi (HW)
